theHAVANAphotography workshops

Join Halifax photographer Dan Callis on assignment in HAVANA, Cuba, a city almost frozen in time with its Colonial architecture and old cars. Present day Havana may still echo the 1950's, but you'll also find a vibrant culture with amazing music, African influences, and, of course, cigars, rum and dancing! In Havana you'll find resourceful, proud and friendly people, all part of an urban landscape that is so visually rich you'll have trouble deciding what not to photograph.

For daily critiques, we suggest you bring your digital camera and a laptop as film processing might be challenging. Through the week there is an opportunity to develop a unique portfolio of photographs and have expert guidance along the way. Your instructor will discuss lighting, photgraphing people in their environment, choosing the proper lens for the subject and photo editing and a range of other practical shooting tips and technical advice. Color temperature and mixed light sources will be discussed. The workshops will cover everything you'll need to become a digitally efficient photographer.

The Havana workshop is for photographers of all levels. It will be a cultural experience seen through your lens. We will live in Central Havana, a busy Cuban neighbourhood just a short walk to Old Havana. Participants are free to go out on their own or stick with the group. Spouses/partners may find the cultural aspect of this workshop appealing also and are encouraged to come along. (The price is the same for partners/spouses).

all photos below taken at Tania y Miguel's, our home base.

Home base will be at casa Tania y Miguel on calle Neptuno,(see photos). Space is limited at Tania and Miguel's and rooms are on a first come first serve basis. Others will be housed close by in a similar warm and friendly guest home.

Most of our outings are within walking distance so bring comfortable walking shoes and clothing for hot weather.

Included in the price of the workshop is your accomodation with breakfast. Everything else is your responsibilty. We will do everything to help keep your personal expenses to a minimum. Lunches in cafes will likely be the norm, ($4-$12 depending on where you eat), and dinners can be arranged at home base for a modest fee of around $6. Lobster is a favorite dinner dish at Tania y Miguel's. Participants are welome to eat at many of Havana's fine paladars or a hotel resturuant. Chinatown is two blocks away. The airport taxi to downtown is $25. From home base we'll be walking most of the time but taxis or bicycle cabs (for 2ppl), are everywhere if you're feeling tired and usually costs between $2 and $7 to anywhere in Havana, (except the airport!). A ride in a 1950's chevy taxi can be quite a thrill!

Canadian money must be converted to Cuban Convertable Peso's at the airport or at a bank. The Cuban Convertable Peso is par with the US dollar. Your pesos can be exchanged when leaving Cuba. There is a $25 peso tax at the airport when you leave Cuba.

Cost is $850cdn for the 5 day workshop and one week accomodation and breakfast.

$425cdn must be paid two months prior to departure to reserve your place in the workshop and accomodations. The remainder can be paid closer to departure date.

Payment is non refundable unless the trip is cancelled due to low enrollment.
